    MXFNX4 Cover stock problem

    Hi
I'm having a problem when saddle stitching 11x17 paper. My cover stock is 50 pound glossy preprinted paper fed from the inserter. Symptom is that the covers are not fed completly down into position before stapling and folding occurs.
All rollers are in good condition and sensors test ok. Covers appear to simply not reach the proper position in time.
Symptom is the same if covers are fed from copier bypass tray.
Works fine if a lighter cover stock is used.
    Has anyone seen this before?

Seen this many times now.... it is definitely a dirty roller problem inside the finisher.... trust me.

The FNX4 is virtually the same as the AR-F16 finisher (Dragon Series). It had a lower door which opened where the booklets exit the finisher. The FNX4 has the lower door handle removed and covered with a grey sticker. Not only that, but the door is locked closed with a plastic locking piece behind the front cover. Therefore the lower door cannot be opened to clean those rollers where the compiling is done before stapling/folding. That is what your problem is.
Dont know why, but someone thought it would be a great idea for this door to be closed permanently.

    This is the fix....

Run sim3 to lift lower tray up. Once up, immediately switch off machine. This will keep both finisher output trays up and out of your way. Remove the lower FRONT cover of the finisher. You will see a locking piece holding a shaft. This is the shaft which is opens the 'locked/hidden' saddle door. From memory, there is 1 screw, and remove that locking piece. Refit the front cover. Remove the grey colored sticker just above the output tray for the booklets. You will see a square shaped shaft with some holes in it. This is where you fit the handle & screw (parts manual for ARF16 has these.. I dont have it one me right now...will get back to you though). You will be able to twist the square shaped shaft upwards to open the lower door. You will then have FULL ACCESS to the saddle-stitch unit rollers. These are almost unreachable any other way. Give these rollers a good clean. You will have no problems with the saddle stitch unit after that.
Fit the new handle & screw onto that exposed shaft so you and the client have access to that door.....or you can not tell them that it is there, and only you know that is how you access that door for cleaning.

Trust me, the machine works fine with the handle fitted & the locking piece removed. It really is a stupid modification to an otherwise great finisher.

I do this mod to all FNX4's that I see. I have the handle's and screws in the car ready to go.

If you are not sure of anything, let me know.

there is also a firmware update for this, of course not on sharps site though. We got ours through our rep. If I remember right there is a tamper that the on/off timing was changed. I've uploaded the firmware as an attachment but changed the file extension to .doc you will have to change it back to .sfu

Not sure what version that actually is which is attached.

The FNX3 & FNX4 firmware version 01.04.D0 corrects rare cases of FSFS_N jams when printing in color mode only, using saddle-stitch mode. This was released in June 2007. No further updates apply or are applicable for this fault.

As machine in question works perfectly fine with plain/lighter media, firmware is not the problem, but obviously should be up to date anyways.

The problem is a dirty roller problem as I said in an earlier post. Trust me, we have ALOT of C-Dragons in the field, and almost all have had this problem.... all have been rectified with rollers being cleaned & handle being fitted to enable access to those rollers.

As I said earlier... these are the parts for the handle & screw to fit it.

        Handle: 0CW4123Q061//
        Screw: 0CW030060FBBi... updated to 0CW030060FBBB

Refer parts manual section29 (saddle delivery assembly).

Newly released Saddle Unit firmware for the MXFNX4.

Was 01.01.D0, now 01.02.D0. Issued to help correct heavy covers in booklet mode.

Main finisher firmware is still 01.04.D0.
Still check & clean the saddle unit rollers as I mentioned above. Works really well.
