A small, lower case 'd' on the display means the machine is in Firmware Update Mode.
The 'd' simply means 'download'.
Any of the small AL & AR models of that engine design all have this feature. Have a look at the Service Manual for them and see the 'Contents of Simulations' section. Standard firmware upgrade procedure sim 49-01, shows how it works.
The same engine design model like the ARM155, has a bigger display, so it actually says the word 'download', not just the 'd'.
All the info I know from the past, is that you cannot turn the machine OFF while in the 'd' download mode until the display says 'off' on the small LED display.
It would say 'off' once the firmware upgrade procedure, using the firmware upgrade software tool has been completed.
If the machine has been turned off before the Firmware upgrade procedure has been completed, there is either damage to a Flash ROM, or the machine is still in 'download' mode on each bootup.
If you really want to try fixing this, perform the firmware upgrade, using the firmware upgrade software & downloading tool.Comment

In my case (AR-5316) firmware update did not give any result. d - is constantly burning. The old main pwb changed under warranty at SHARP. After testing, I was told that it was defective chip IC10. Flash ROM LH28F800BJE
