i've got a problem with colour registration on a mx5500 where the drive gear on the transfer unit is cracked across the driving pin. is this a common problem? if so i'll have one of these on my car stock

I see it quite often. It affects all MX transfer belt units, not just the C-Dragon. If the belt unit has previously been refurbed maybe twice or more, it's more likely to happen as it gets old. It does sit directly below the fuser, so constant heat and drive tension doesn't help it.
You are right about the rego problem. It goes in and out of rego with each page generally.
I keep a few of them in my car. They are available in the X1 maintenance kits as well (transfer rollers & drive gear).
