can i replace it by a new one 80 or 160 gb ?

or does it need pre installed files for starting up the machine ?

HDD 40 GB is put on the MX-3500FN / N, MX-4500FN / N
HDD 80GB is put on the MX-3501FN / N, MX-4501FN / N
I think that instead of 40 GB HDD can be installed HDD 80GB and 160 GB, if its pre-partition on the computer, as HDD 40GB but not format! For example the program Acronis. I tried to just copy the 40GB drive to 160GB disk at a low level (of the cluster in the cluster). The copied disc was removed from the staff. The result was positive for the copier AR-M351/451, AR-M550/620/700

You can put in any IDE hard drive over 40gb, without doing anything to it. As long as it is formatted, the machine will do the rest upon installation. There are no 'pre installed' files need to startup the machine, but the factory installed hard drive does have the user manuals on it. You can download these and install them just like a firmware upgrade procedure in sim 49 if you like, or dont worry about it if the client will never use them.
Its always best to perform a device & storage clone of the machine before doing anything. This is either done on the webpage (logged in as admin), or by sim 56-02. This way you can reinstall the scanning addresses which are stored on the hard drive. You will get a U2-05 code on the first install of the new hard drive. If you have a clone backup file of the hard drive, install it at this point. Otherwise, run sim 16 & restart. The machine will bootup as normal. Run a hard drive read/write test just as a precaution to test the new drive.

IDE hard drive over 40gb, for example in our country it is impossible to buy. Buy it as a spare for the Sharp - very expensive. That's why we buy the HDD to 160GB in a computer supermarket.

If you are desperate, there are IDE hard drives on eBay by the truckload! There are many good computer shops which will still have them floating around. Even if they are second hand, it doesnt matter. I have put in 40Gb hard drives into a MX which came straight from an old Whale ARC260, no problems at all. The MX partitions the drive on first power up into the partitions it needs for document filing, user area & job logs.
