    Sharp and DNS setup

Copying this over from the connectivity forum.

    Sharp and DNS setups
Not sure if this is the right forum. Recently set up 2 copiers in the same network but different locations. MX4101 and an MXM260. IT setup the mac address on their DHCP server and the machines find the IP addresses just fine. However, the 4101 found the DNS server and updated the information just fine but the 260 did not. IT wants it to be found automatically but I'm having a problem getting the machine to update the information. Some suggestions on why one machine would do it and one would not. Both are setup with print, scan and fax modules enabled, I set the domain name of the copier to match, everything else was set to default. Also enable the WINS service and this did not update either. I'm missing something but not sure what.

Thank you in advance for your time and effort in this matter.

I"m not sure about this but i think you can only enter the DNS manually.

Are you sure someone in IT departement didnt configure it while setting up stmp/ldap ?

DNS settings are configured manually via web interface. Even through DHCP there can still be the occasional problems and difficulties setting up, for the sake of simplicity I tend to set mine up with a static IP.

Check the DNS settings of the 260 just to verify they have the same DNS settings, I've missed the odd comma once or twice :P.
Reset the nic if there's no differences and start from scratch, and unless they're actively using WINS and have a server for it, it could be disabled without any noticeable difference.

Thanks for the replies. They have a dedicated WINS server but we didn't set it up on the other unit. I'm going back this AM and will set it up manually. We are replacing some Canon machines and not sure how the setup is different from theirs but trying to make the right impression as these are some of our first machines with the main county offices. Have already verified that they have the same DNS server was just thinking that I had overlooked something since I do not normally worry about this setting and input my IP addresses manually as you recommend Akita.

        Thank you for the responses.

WINS is similar to DNS, so having both active simultaneously might be causing conflicts. Try just using static IP reservation through DHCP and DNS and see how it goes, you shouldn't need both. Theoretically, if DNS is available, WINS is only necessary if pre win2k servers or clients need to resolve host-names.
