    Why initializing developer without toner?

    Hi,

Why exactly do you have to initialize developer without toner on the Sharp mfp's, on installation?

It will propably have something to do with determining the control level for reference toner density, but what happens, except maybe overtoning after lot of prints, when you initialize with the toners in the machine?

Do you initialize developer after maintenance also without toners?

Thx in advance for your opinion.

    Regards,

On any of the new machines when the toner is inserted the doors on the toner open up and a rush of toner can come down the pipe which will throw off your reading when you execute 25-2.

It is recommended that you remove the toners when doing the calibration. Also remove the toners when transporting the machine. Also gently install the toners after "shaking" them.

Our company has seen machines come up with F2 codes after the machine was dropped off at the customers location because the toners were not removed and due to rough side walks, bumps in the road etc. toner came down the pipe and overtoned the unit. We tried running full color pages to remove the excess toner but nothing works and the color DV had to be replaced which is a expensive lesson.

I demoed a MXM453 once and i had to show the lady 3 times in a row how to remove the toner. My machine over toned after i did that from all the handling and i had to use DV disable to run sky shots in order to get the ref value high enough that the copier would not code out. That one thankfully recovered.

Moral of the story, when your color DV costs between $300-$400, make a service manager happy and take out the toner.

Evil will always triumph because good is dumb.

This is a somewhat generic response compared to the previous one but here goes.
Some units over the years did not have sufficient engineering to disable the toner add function during DV calibration. This is my guess. Just cheap engineering. If the toner gets added during calibration you will have more problems than you want down the road. Particularly if you come in behind some guy who didn't do it right. You won't necessarily think it's a DV calibration problem so you'll be looking all over just because he didn't do his (her) job.
