Sharp 1540cs again with the L-1

The copier started doing the L-1 happy dance, and I don't think it's the scanner (but maybe).

From what I've read, the code is for a scanner position error. However, the scanner on power up will seek home, go right one inch and seek home again. That's when it errors.

I would think from this action (and I can slide the scanner to the right by hand and it will seek home properly) that it IS aware of where it is.

Any suggestions as to what to trouble shoot, or what to replace?

    Thanks

The scanner rail/bar and bushings have to be extremly clean and lightly lubed.

Have had several of these. Replace the main board.

          Thanks

I had already checked the cable from end to end, and lubed the rail after reading everything I could find on possible causes including the shipping lock accidentally engaging. All is good, and with the belt off the scanner moves very freely.

As mentioned, the copier seems to know where home is as it finds it if I slide the scanner to the right, and also re-homes after bouncing to the right an inch where it then errors.

So my best guess is that the copier IS homing itself through the startup routine, but something does not know that. This happened after gradually getting flaky over a period of months.

Unless someone else has any suggestions, I'm going with the mainboard as it's actions indicate a partial lose of logic communication.

          Thanks

Check the Scanner Latch (left side under the control panel). The fin there should be positioned parallel to paper movement. Oiling the shaft is a good idea (I've seen all these symptoms before. Check code 1-1, see if the scanner moves freely to the override position and back and the home position light is ON when it comes back. Good luck.

              scanner woes

On these machines that have the scanner guide rod and use the drive belt system, the scanner rod needs to be cleaned, I use alcohol and a green scotch brite pad, to clean the guide rod, q-tips to clean the bushings out, you will need several, as you will find some gunk in them, and I use Reel X on the rod and bushings, run a line of the lube, and work it around the rod, use a clean q-tip and work some lube into the bushings, put it all back together, and check the opperation.
