    MX4501 gear clicking noise

Mainly on warm up initial cycle. Then some when copying
    Issue is:
Uneven sound almost sounds like when fuser has a flat spot. However a little more like a gear not totally engaging in sound quality.

Sounds like in fuser area or exit ass'y.
    Copier has inner finisher.
When slide open then can hear from exit ass'y. However, as move around the sound is amplified all around fuser but appears to be more towards the rear.

    What I have done.
    Swapped fusers.
Swapped the slide out door with the secondary belt.
    Checked transfer belt.
Manually turned all gears and checked spring tension and also looked for ground gear dust.

So far haven't been able to zero in on what is causing it.

I think there is a technical bulletin on the 4501 that states the noise from fusing unit on warm up is actually caused by the fuser drive motor I have one in the office making this noise but havent got round to changing the motor yet

Thanks Sharphead. I'm going back to this new account today and will check to see when this box was manufact. With your input, I checked the T.B's and saw the one on the fusing motor. I will run motor test.

The other noise occurs from the gears and belt on the back of the dv units.

                  Re: MX4501 gear clicking noise

Glad you found your problem. If you have to chase clicking noises before changing the fuser try putting fuser oil around the bearings on the roller. The rollers are aluminium and the bearings are steel. On warmup they expand at different rates and can cause clicking. The oil seems to help with it even though it's not really a big deal. Once the fuser is hot it goes away.

Your machine didn't have the inner finisher did it?

Yes this one has inner finisher. Cable to machine had been cut. I soldered wire which cleared code but still noise. Interestingly, after replacing cable, noise seems to have gone away.

                      Re: MX4501 gear clicking noise

When the inner finisher is installed the offset motor can't drive the offset unit as it's locked in place by the finisher frame and it will cause a grinding noise. Activating the offset motor in sim 6 will cause the same noise as it's jamming the motor.
