Pretty sure they're the same machine, just a difference in region. 2300 is North American, 2301 seems to be everywhere else. I could be mistaken though.

MX-2300/2700 became the 2600/3100/2301. 2301 is the next generation of 2300.
These are now the 2610/3610/2640/3140 Aries machines.

There we go. Never heard of the 2301 in this region. Now there's the 2310 as well, for extra confusion!

I was recently educated that the 2301 is the CR2-lite. The precursor to the 2600/3100 machines almost. Hence why it uses the 31 toners instead of 27.

Different compositions, I believe they started gearing towards finer toner particles as the series progressed from CR1 to CR2 to CR3 series.
