    [Misc] MX-5111N w/ MX-LC11 (large capacity hopper)

Ok, so I have a customer that has the above mentioned set-up (MX-5111N w/ MX-LC11 (large capacity hopper), with 4 regular trays as well.

Another tech was out at their request to set trays 3 and 4 to cascade. He did some things to attempt this and thought it was working, but the customer stated it never worked. They just dealt with it and added paper when the tray was out. Now their jobs have changed and they are requesting that we have the machine cascade (auto-switch trays) on all 4 of the regular trays, and still leaving the default to the LC11.

I have been everywhere I can think of and clicked everything I think I should and unclicked everything else. I made sure on the machine especially that the "auto switch trays" box is checked.... etc. I just am not 100% sure what the previous tech may have done to "introduce" this issue, or if it is something else.

So, I am not sure if it is something the previous tech did... or just something I am missing. But I just cannot get the machine to cascade at all in print mode. When I step up to the machine and copy there is no problem. I pick the tray (tray 1) because if I don't it will default to the LC11. It pulls the page from tray 1, briefly pauses and tells me via the display to add paper to tray one, but then keeps right on going and pulls from tray 2.

Step away from the machine, and go to print, and no matter what I try to do (see above... click, unclick, change..etc). It stops at tray 1 and says add paper, never finishing the job. EVERYTHING stays the same with the only difference being copy works fine, print does not.

I have tried to replicate this issue in our office, but have been unsuccessful. Everything seems to just always cascade (auto-switch). I am thinking it has something to do with the LC11, but cannot verify or test that because we do not have one in our office/demo.... and it just so happens this is the only one we have in the field as well.

I know that is probably long winded and someone probably knows the issue right away, but I wanted to give as many details as possible just in case I am not completely overlooking something simple.

    THANKS TECHS!!!!

1st update firmware, then try unhooking the lc11 and trying you may want to look at thier software making sure it doesn,t ovedirect it to a paticular tray. Also make sure all trays are set for same sizeand type of paper.

All 3 great ideas. THANKS. For some reason I always rule out or don't think of firmware, because in my experience issues we see normally aren't a firmware issue. But can't hurt.

I don't think it is a software thing, but darn good point. I was in such a worry I didn't pay close attention and only tested one document they pulled up.

Trays are all set the same (machine, driver and web....etc), and as mentioned cascade perfectly under copy mode.

Thanks for the response. Gives me a place to start!!!!

If it is not working for print, it is most likely due to two reasons:
        1. the paper source is set to a specific tray in the print driver. If not on the default Auto Select, it will only pull from the source only, no matter the machine setting.
        2. Under Paper Tray settings on the Sharp, there is a check box to allow copy, print, doc filling, and fax from that drawer. If the print boxes are not checked for all trays, auto-tray switching will not kick in.

Some older software uses PJL command to specify the paper source and in those cases, the PJL commands of the software must be changed.

That was my understanding as well, which is why I believe it was changes made previously. In the right window I had to troubleshoot...the print driver would not let me select "auto select" on paper type (box under treaty selection), but said "ignore".

The issue is if I put auto select on the first box, it defaults to the LC11. I'm not on front of the machine, but will be soon....so I will verify these suggestions/advice.

          Thanks again everyone

            Fixed

The issue seems to be with the driver. Even though you tell the machine EXACTLY what is in the trays, on the driver when you select the tray you want if DEFAULTS to "ignore" as the paper type. In order to do what the customer wanted (cascade), the driver must be told AGAIN, what is in the tray. in this case "color" paper was the assigned paper type. I created a "print profile" with those conditions, to help the customer. They just have to remember to select that profile. We'll see.

Hope this helps. Thanks for all the replies.
