MX-M363N and MX-B401N scan to NAS

Has anyone been successful with having a Sharp scan to a NAS box(Network Storage device). They ultimately want to have fax forwarding to the NAS. I have just been thrown on this problem, but a previous tech has been working it. Sharp is saying that it will probably not happen and IT from hospital is really not much of a help, because they cannot even get me make and model of NAS.

It is a hospital and they will not turn on NetBIOS. They are using TCP/IP V4. The only thing I can think of trying is trying to setup Scan to Desktop and try using port 139 or 445

If your NAS can act as an FTP server, that would be about the only way I could think of using it.

port 139 is for NetBIOS, the older sharps may not work with port 445. SMB specs are port 139 as back in the day NetBIOS/Wins was being used for network communications by Microsoft(print and file sharing and the like) and port 445 if NetBIOS wasn't used. I use a utility called netscans to search for open ports that the mfp's use. The first Sharp that had port 445 open was the mx-2610. SMB that is on win7 and 8 looks for port 445(smb v2 orv3) first then is supposed to look for port 139(smb ver1) which is usually closed as NetBIOS is disabled/turned off . If the user won't allow NetBIOS then you won't be able to scan to folder using smb unless the 363 has port 445 open. This is all dependent on the NAS. If you can put folders on the NAS from windows and make them shareable and it doesn't use a proprietary software. you can use a ftp program and send files to the folder on the nas. I use sharps network scanner tool at a Hospital here as the IT wasn't using NetBIOS and getting admin rights to folders and the such wasn't happening either. NST works good as it is setup on the users computer and allows the scan to go to the folder on the server or to a folder on the pc and then that user copies the file to the server.

You could also try sharing a folder on the NAS with a desktop. If you can scan to that same folder on the desktop; it would show on the NAS too. Just a thought on a workaround, anyway.

Thanks for the workarounds and the explanations for SMB. I will definitely keep this info for future reference.

I jumped the gun on this one. I went to the client and he explained that he just wanted to know if he could use SMB1 without Netbios, he knew he could not use SMB2. My coworker at the shop and this guy has been going back and forth for 14 days. My coworker was going through our regional rep and I am not sure why they did not come up with the answer no. I called tech support, they said no, customer was fine with it.

Sad, because if I take on an existing issue, I like to start from scratch.
