Sharp AR208 gray in non image area

I have a Sharp AR208D that is gray in the non-image area. You can see the test pattern also. It looks good, just gray where it should be white. If I do a internal test print the grid pattern comes out clean and looks good.. Only if I scan off the glass or adf does this happen. I first replaced the scanner assembly, but problem is still the same. I have order a new main pcb and ribbon, but haven't made it back to install them. Any suggestions what might be causing this?

What happens if you adjust the exposure?

Gets a little lighter. But still gray in non-image areas.

I am thinking a did that adj. Shading adj. But just to be sure when I go back I will try it again before I install main board. Just trying understand why it would change all of a sudden. Working and then after weekend customer said it started.
