    Subject: Sharp MX-3500 copy quality/jams/etc

The customer called for black lines, back page
spotty with black toner and maintenance DK, I
replace the black drum and blade.
    No lines-ok.
Paper jams at transfer belt, no image, paper
folding like accordion, leading edge stocked at
transfer belt and pressure belt. I Can't see
anything wrong with the 2 belts (beside a 3/4"
crack in the transfer belt edge) they both are
turning fine by hand. Any idea why the jam?
Also start to get "maintenance vk", the copier
    has only 30,000 prints.
After the installation of the new drum 30
copies came clear, then the copies got dirty
with background on half the page.
Any idea for all those problem will be
    appreciated.
Forgot to run calibration after installing the
drum, that maybe why the background.
    Thanks

Maintenance DK and VK go hand in hand. Check your 22-6 setting for black developer and see what the meter count is. Just to let you know black copy count is not what is on your developer since whenever you do a "color" copy it also uses black. It can be a little confusing if you aren't used to the way Sharp does it (for example: if you have copy counts of 31,000 black and 69,000 color the total black drum and developer count would be 100,000 so you would get your DK and VK messages. You can also get these messages if your drum and DV units have a lot of day usage or turning time even if they don't have the copy count something else that can be confusing). If you didn't do a color calibration that could very well explain you copy quality issues. If you have a serious crack in your primary transfer belt that could definetely be causing your jam condition and I would consider replacing it because if it's not causing problems now it will very shortly in the future.

    Good luck.

Did you ever encounter that kind of jam when the paper reach the transfer belt?

Do you replace the all developer unit or only the developer on a VK maintenance?

Replace developer only, the unit is still fine. Unless you like throwing away money, in which case please just send it my way.

The crack in your transfer belt can absolutely be the cause of your jams, the alternative is that the main drive gear of your transfer belt has cracked in the housing for the belt shaft + pin. Replace your belt entirely or rebuild it to alleviate the problem.

Yes but mine was a little more severe, the transfer belt medium actually tore slightly and had folded over so it would catch the cleaning blade as it came around. Didn't do it everytime but as soon as I saw the condition of the belt I rebuilt it and problem solved (also solved some of my CQ issues I had at the time).

            Good luck.

As above try new belt. But also check the condition of the cleaning section. I have had bits of paper jam up the transfer cleaning unit and caused the belt not to rotate as well as copy quality problems. There is also the gear failure that causes problems. If memory serves you get a replacement gear in one of the transfer PM kits.
