MX2310U SSL communication with the SMTP server failed. Check the server setting.

Using known good Gmail accounts. Changed Port settings From 25 to 465 and got a Connection failed. Changed back to 25 and got SSL communication with the SMTP server failed. Check the server setting. Tried 587 and same massage. Any suggestions would be helpful

    Thanks
    Kevin

this is from a sharp tech tip on gmail, this should get you in the ballpark, you also may have to contact google for info as google has made changes.
i think google doesn't use or has limited the port 25 for email, as it is not secure. for DNS try the google DNS of 8.8.8.8.

Set up a new Gmail account for the MFP. The new email address and the password will be used
    for SMTP authentication.
    2. Open the MFP webpage and go to Network Settings then Services Settings.
    3. Enter the DNS Settings. This information should be provided by the customer or their IT
    department.
    4. Click the SMTP tab and enter the following SMTP settings (see page 2 for picture):
    a. Primary Server name is smtp.gmail.com and the Port Number should be 587.
    b. Enter the new Gmail address as the Reply Address.
    c. Check the box to enable SSL.
    d. Check the box for SMTP Authentication.
    e. Type in the new Gmail address in the User Name field.
    f. Check the Change Password box and type in the password for the new Gmail account.

I've tried those settings. I was on the phone with tech support. After resetting the nic and resetting the machine back to factory. Also cleared printer memory. Plus new firmware. We came to the same conclusion. It's a board issue. Hopefully. 90% sure.

try the smtp server for the restricted gmail below, requires no ssl or authentication . We have this issue with schools that use gmail, it works for awhile and google changes something and it stops. I just setup our 2610 with a new gmail account using restricted gmail server , port 25 and gmail address as reply to no problems.
then setup gmail smtp server, with ssl, port 465, reply to gmail address, user: gmail address, password; gmail password, did not work. only thing I changed was port to 587 and it works now. try the restricted gmail, if it works then you know there is some ssl issue or port 465 or 587 are being blocked.

You can set up your on-premises multifunction printer, scanner, fax, or application to send email through Google Apps. The three available options are: SMTP relay service, Gmail SMTP server and Restricted Gmail SMTP server.
For details about configuring your device or application to send SMTP messages, refer to its documentation. Google Support cannot assist with the configuration settings.
        1. SMTP relay service - used to send mail from your organization by authenticating with the IP address(s). You can send messages to anyone inside or outside of your domain.
        2. Gmail SMTP server - requires authentication with your Gmail/Google Apps account and password. Messages can be sent to anyone inside or outside of your domain.
        3. Restricted Gmail SMTP server - does not require authentication, and you will be restricted to send messages to Gmail or Google Apps users only.

The table below will help you decide which one of these options will best meet your needs:
        FQDN of SMTP Service smtp-relay.gmail.com smtp.gmail.com aspmx.l.google.com
        Configuration requirements Port 25, 465, or 587
        SSL/TLS optional.
One or more static IP addresses are required.
        Port 465 (SSL required)
        Port 587 (TLS required)
        Dynamic IPs allowed
        Port 25
        TLS not required
        Dynamic IPs allowed
Mail can only be sent to Gmail or Google Apps users
Requires authentication IP address provides authentication. Your full Gmail or Google Apps email address required for authentication No.
Bypasses anti-spam No. Suspicious emails may be filtered. No. Suspicious emails may be filtered. No. Suspicious emails may be filtered.
Sending Limits Limits for registered Google Apps users.
A registered user cannot relay messages to more than 10,000 recipients per day.
For full SMTP relay limits please see Sending limits for the SMTP relay service.
2000 Messages per day. See Sending limits for more detailed information. Per user receiving limits will apply.

I have only gotten the regular google settings to work, but maybe I was doing something wrong. I would try a different type of scanning, to see if it is the board. Whether it be network scanning or Sharpdesk. I have seen once or twice that the google DNS (8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4) did not work. I switched over to the ISP provider's DNS and it worked. Not sure if it would work in your case, though. I think it was an ISP restriction.

have you input "reply email address"?
leave it blank or invalid format also can make it fail to communicate with stmp server.

I don't know if this will help or not but the reply address MUST be the actual gmail address or the copier will not authenticate to send.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I went back the other day and Scanning to email with all the standard Google info worked. The only thing I can think happened was a local provider issue. Haven't had a call back in a few days so we will call this one done.

                  Thanks
