    [Misc] Random email issue

Customer has an 2 MX-3115s. He also has 2 6240s, and 4 5141s. All on the same network, All set up identical as far as networking. The IT guy is very savvy and I have worked with him for quite some time. He knows his stuff.
He called in today saying that one of the 3115 will sometimes error on scan to email. (server not found contact sys admin) or something like that. But here's the thing: It's sporadic. He doesn't want a tech to come out to look at it, because it'll work 90% of the time. He has tried changing domain names and SMTP servers to IP addresses since they can be finicky about that for some reason some times. But everything is the same across the board and it's only this machine that sometimes has issues. He has exhausted all possible issues with the network, network cable, port, switch, etc. Says it has to be the machine.

    Possible issue with the NIC?

    Ideas?

    Thanks!

    Re: Random email issue

Do they use their own internal email addresses? Had a 3100 that would randomly do this using their email address and server. I switched the machine to a gmail account and they have never had another issue. My issue was more than just random but it was similar. We have 4 other units on site that use their internal email/server and this was the only one that had a problem.

    Good luck.

For the 10% that don't work, are these perhaps large, color scan jobs, which may exceed the email attachment size limit? For the ones that fail, does it look like its connecting and half-way through it errors out, or does it look like it's never going at all (i.e. does the line light turn green)?

See if there is some commonality with the ones that fail, otherwise you would probably have to wireshark the connection when it is failing to see what is happening.

Also, if possible, try swapping the MX-3115Ns (location, network connection, and network settings) and see if the problem follows the copier or the network.

Since you have 2 Mx-3115's and one works fine, I would clone the one that doesn't have any issues and load on to the one that has some issues. May help!!!

What does the Job Log say? Have you looked to see what error codes, if any, are logged when it fails. You may notice a pattern with the failed scans when looking at the job log also. Sending to certain address, certain time of day, etc.
