    ES456 Toner not recognized

Here's what the customer told me.
They installed an aftermarket toner and got this message. They took the toner back and got two
    OEM toners.
Install the OEM toner and the message did not go away.
I went through the screens to install the toner at least 10 times. I looked into the cavity
and saw the springs that contact the chip. They looked ok, like the ones on their other
    ES456.
Took the toner out of that one and installed it in the 1st one with the toner message,
same result. Installed the toner from the first unit into the second good unit. Same
result, toner not recognized. Swap them back and the second good unit displayed
the toner not recognized message until I went through the toner replace screen.
Then the second unit cleared the message.

They also called me for the second unit for jams in their MJ1101 finisher.
That's an odd paper path, can't say I like it. I will put that in another post.

So has anyone had this problem? I was flustered this day and my back was
hurting from moving a machine the week before. Not the best day for me.

Is it possible that the aftermarket chip, which I found out later from the dealer
they had several returned for that reason, could have shorted out the chip reader?

These are the only two of this model that I have and I just sold them about three
    months earlier.

    Any input would be helpful.

    Thanks

    Re: ES456 Toner not recognized

I fixed it. I took the chip detector board out to look at it. I unplugged it from the harness and took the circuit board out to view
the connection from the springs to the board. They are not connected to the board the connection depends on the cartridge
pushing on the springs against the contacts on the board. And hope the springs line up with the contacts of the chip on the
    toner cartridge.
This is a delicate assembly. The plastic is weak and I almost broke one of the hooks that hold the board in place. The board
only goes in one way according to the location posts. The two hooks hold the board in place on the springs.

What I did was this, to take the assembly out I unplugged the harness from the cpu bd (I guess), the toner motor and
another motor located below the toner motor. This gave me some slack. Remove the drum and developer assembly.
This gave me a clear view of the chip detector bd. One screw and it was in my hand and can be easily unplugged.

Move the hooks off the board and remove the board. Remove each spring and stretch the end of it just a shade.
I took the harness out of the machine to plug in the board. Reconnect the harness and smoke test it. Power on.
It warmed up and printed everything in memory.

    Hope this helps someone else
