Toshoba Scan to PDF controller GL-1020 - a quick question or two

I am looking to buy and install a Toshiba Scan to PDF upgrade for my Toshiba ES 500. My 550 already has network print capability - but no scan/network scan capability. I understand the scan-to-PDF over a network upgrade is a GL-1020. A couple of quick questions would really help me out:

    1) I have two vendors who have the GL-1020. One tells me it is an EXTERNAL controller, the other tells me it is an INTERNAL controller card. I doubt they can both be right. And the prices are miles apart. So, is the GL-1020 an external controller or an internal controller/card?

    2) With instructions, can a novice install this so that the 550 will recognize the upgrade and scan to PDF?

The 550 as configured now does have storage capability and I believe I have seen a HD inside it... and it does have network print capability - I use that all the time.

Thank you in advance for your help,
    Tim

    Hi Tim! (again)
I am seriously doubted that it is still possible to find scan upgrade for GL-1020. But here is the good news - in latest software for GL-1020 you are getting scan for "free". It is a Linux system. Actually you can set pdf and tiff files, also you can set 6 different ways to scan ...

Concerning internal/external - non sense. Both controllers GL-1020 and GA-1140 are mounted on the same place in the machines and both are under back cover. So mainly two controllers have has different interface when you press network button (and functionalities of course).

I'll never ask if I didn't check user manual, service manual, parts list, BSI/TNI/TAD... web, existing threads.
