    Questions about Toshiba eStudio 230

    Hi folks.

New to the forum, so apologies in advance for any newbie mistakes.

I've just acquired a secondhand Toshiba eStudio 230. Unfortunately it came with no cables, manuals or software. I've got spare cables, and I think I've now downloaded most of the manuals and the driver software.

Unsurprisingly I have a number of questions.

First and foremost, the printer I have has a purple dongle at the back. Am I correct in assuming that this is the GM2020 that is need for both printing and scanning?

In relation to scanning, I notice from the manuals and the spec sheet that I need a fax add-on (GD1150). How do I tell if this is already installed? Is it simply a matter of plugging it into my exisiting phone line, calling my phone number and then seeing if a fax picks up?

What about networking? I have an existing wireless network set up. I have tried putting in static ip details and also just setting the network to dynamically obtain an ip address. However, each time I try to scan to email the operation fails. I'm assuming this is because the network does not work. At the moment I do not have the machine plugged into any router or print server because I thought that it operated wirelessly. How do I tell if the wireless lan adapter has been installed? The spec sheet indicates this is a GD1010. If it is not already installed, must I use the specified adapter or can I simply hook up the machine to a wireless print server / router instead? Finally, in relation to the GD1010 I read somewhere (on the spec sheet I think) that it supports 802.11b. Assuming that I can simply connect it to a wireless print server, does the print server have to support 802.11b (ie is an 802.11g print server okay to use - I'm not all that technically savvy so I'm not sure if all wireless g print servers are backward compatible).

    Thanks in advance.

I believe that the thumbdrive/enabler should be marked as to which one it is. I believe that it is the gm2020. A quick test is to press the scan button at the top. If it changes screens and lights up then it is a scan enabler.

As to the fax look on the back right corner near the top and see if it has a phone jack. If it does then you have the fax installed. If not then you do not.

As to the networking issues. first does it have an antenna (it looks like an old phone) hooked onto the back. If not then wireless is not installed.
second you will either need to find the wireless card and antenna, use a wireless gaming router, or hard wire it to your network. I would use the last unless you cannot run a cable to the switch/hub/router. Until the machine is connected to the network scanning will not work. And most wireless g is backward compatible to the b standard. Not always but usually. They are not compatible with the a standard (some will but not all).
And Star Trek was just a tv show...yeah right!

      Thanks Mr Spock.

I think I can tick the boxes for the scan and fax, but unfortunately I don't think I have a wireless lan card attached. My difficulty is that the photocopier is to be used as part of my home office. The internet connection is upstairs and the copier is downstairs. Does it have to be (or preferrably) a gaming router or will any wireless printer server do?

      Thanks again.

As long as you can run the ethernet cable from the MFP to WAP (Print server) then you should be good to go. Emujo
