My personal opinion is that anything over 30 pages per minute should not be used for envelopes. Manufacturers may say they can but I try to convince the customer not too.
I am sure you are correct. I am trying to win a deal against a competitive sales rep. My objective is to present a short term solution. Once I get the deal and this small obstacle is forgotten in the Purchasing process, I will recommend the customer uses a laser printer for their envelopes. Besides printing an envelope on a copier cost a full click. Printing an envelope on a printer cost only the toner.
We have customers printing envelopes on these machines in ---LIMITED--- quantities and they all understand it is NOT supported and if they do it we are not responsible for the results. Generally the envelopes will wrinkle unless you get one that the flap isn't in contact with the feed rollers on the bypass. I.E. the flap is straight across not a "V"
I still think it's better to stick to a little printer for envelopes though.
