    Toshiba 1370

    Toshiba 1370

I was so stupid to offer to repair a very ancient copier for a welfare institution for free........

    Here's my problem:

How to get those damned clutches out? I tried all obvious screws but there's to much hardware in the way. Cannot be that all the crap around the clutches has to be removed or............??

It's been awhile, let me see here, the entire paper feed assy needs to come out in order to replace the 2 clutches. There are screws on the front of the unit and I believe 3 screws on the back along with some plugs. Also pull the cassette out before you remove the paper feed unit so you don't break the add paper sensor. You must also remove the drum/dev unit. Hope that helps.

      You have two paths.

One, bite the bullet, use a manual and tear it apart. You may be able to clean those clutches with alcohol into them and spinning them.

Two, tell the customer you will be unable to obtain parts for it even and help them find a replacement.

I would go with the second option. Not to get out of it, but because, even tho you are doing this for free, they will have another issue with this machine who knows how soon. Since they are a non-profit, they are eligible for funding from numerous programs, local, state and federal.
They simply need to budget for a new machine and not rely on wings and prayers.
      Good Luck!

You can not clean these clutches and make them work. You need to replace them as a pair. One is feed and one is registration. Toshiba/Lanier came out with new style clutches to solve this problem. Unfortunatley I do not have the part number handy.

Actually, I used to clean them all of the time. If you take them aprt, you will see that they are identical, and really a spring cluth inside. Pull it apart, clean all surfaces, and put 1 drop of oil on the spring. After that, you are out of options.

Let me explain my post a little better; you can not clean them and have them work consistently for very long. The problem will come back. With the new style clutch the problem doesn't come back.

Send me an email and I'll send you a free copy of the Parts & Service manual. I'm always happy to help out a non-profit.

you need to remove the drum and developer units and then remove the clam shell limiting screws.
be careful when opening the machine all the way as it may spring back hard.
once you have it opened up it will be easier to remove the clutches and replace them.
I remember when these machines were new, they did have troubles with those clutches.
if you are ordering new clutches you should also check the bushings as well, maybe replace them when its all apart as well.
depending on the copy count you may also want to take a close look at the registration roller.
the clutches were changed to a different part number from the manual about a year after they were released.
