I removed the WD800 harddisk, attached it to my computer, booted up with Parted Magic and run a "Extensive SMART Test". It completed without errors and there are no reallocated sectors or other bad things.

Is there anything I could try before doing a firmware upgrade / re-install?
I got the Service Manual and Service Handbook (thank you ) but I could not find a recommended procedure for this case.

Hard drive located in the back of machine behind 2 covers.
This is a standard pata hard drive in the 80-120 gb range.
Check with manuals4you to see if he has the complete firmware zip file. This will have the flashing instructions in it. If not then buy the manual and the firmware.

Yep, I would be going straight for the HDD first up which means you need to do a firmware upgrade / re-install anyway.

Can anyone give me a hint where the HDD is located and where to get the needed files for re-install?
This one is at our local sports club, so there is not much $$$

...and I doubt that there are spare-parts are available for this old one?

first and foremost THIS IS NOT A FULL COLOR COPIER!!!! If you intend on using as such you will be spending a lot on service and parts. This is a black and white copier with occasional business color capabilities.

second this sounds like corrupt firmware or bad hard drive.

From time to time our e-studio 281C hangs after power on (it only displays boot logo).

Is there anything I could try to get rid of this error?
