e-Studio 3500c new hdd needs firmware

    Hi all,

I have a mate with a 3500c that has a dead (or terminally ill) hdd.
I have the tech handbook and a couple of client discs v3.01 and v3.10 but no firmware.
He hasn't got much cash either so I'm trying to stay clear of Toshiba.
    Can anyone help out?

Thanks for the offer Gregg but, from what I can discern from research it probably won't work.
I'd need to match the f/ware for the other components like sys rom and engine rom etc.
From a close reading of the handbook the hdd swap needs (at min) a usb f/ware reload.
Also, the new hdd (which I have) is partitioned during the process:

      Firmware Stored Model specific
      folder name Data file name
Master data Hard diskSystem ROM System control PC board
      (SYS board)
      firmImage0.bin, firmImage1.bin

      Engine ROM Logic PC board
      (LGC board)
      firmImage2.bin

Scanner ROM Scanning section control PC board
      (SLG board)
      firmImage2.bin

I'm not sure what your concern with what Gregg sent you is but I checked the SH and it does say 8MB for master hard disk data which is incorrect, the current FW I have v355 has 1,2,3,@ 32MB and 4 is around 12MB, as well as the SYS, LGC and ENG.

I think your kicking a gift horse in the mouth, check you private messages again.

          Hi Mr Fixit,

Gregg was offering to sell a hdd parted out from one of these machines.
As I saw it there was likely to be a f/ware mismatch if all I did was replace the drive.
I am not that familiar with these machines and was only going by the handbook.

What makes you think the HDD is dead? What does the Display show eg. a static picture of the machine? Was there an Error code displayed? Can you access 08 mode? (08-900 will display current FW version). Have you tried to clear the NVM Flags in 3 + clear mode? (enter > 1 > clear). If 08 mode can be accessed, Formatting the HDD using 08-690 will only clear the Data/corrupt or otherwise on the drive and will not affected any System Programming Power off then On, just suggestions.

Hi Canonbundy and thanks for your help,

All I have is a static pic of the machine with no error codes.
Keys are totally unresponsive so all modes are inaccessible.
Also, the drive sounds incredibly dodgy (using a stethoscope).
It is not running at all smoothly with the speed surging up and down.
I have a copy of f/ware v355 now so thought to try a new drive.

Ok, I gave this same info to 'Dry Torch' but didn't receive any reply.

HDD must be at least 80GB, unzip the FW to a USB key formatted in FAT, open the Folder & copy the File 'MENTUSB 0' to the ROOT dir of the Key, insert key in M/C > HOLD 4 & 9 DOWN & Power On, untick all items & select ONLY > SYSTEM and HDD (upgrading Engine & Scanner at the same time may cause a display of 'HDD UPDATE FAILED'), if successful (UPDATED COMPLETED will be displayed beside each Item), then Power Off then On Holding 4 & 9 again and untick SYSTEM & HDD to update the other Items, remove the Key enter 08 Mode > Power On holding 0 + 8, check 900 (current FW version) > enter 947 init > yes, 1119 > init > yes, 693 > init > yes Power Off then On should operate ok.

                Cliff.

                  Thanks for the info Cliff,

I'll follow your procedure as soon as I receive and install the new hdd.
Thanks for putting it in a nutshell for me, I'm still trying to decode the manual lol.

Assuming you are waiting for the HDD from Gregg, try Powering the machine up normally after installing the drive, BEFORE updating the FW - if the normal screen appears, shut the unit down and Power up in 08 mode and check 80-900 for FW version.

                      Hi Cliff,

Actually I'm going a different way as I now have the v355 f/ware.
I'm planning to install a factory refurbed 80gb seagate when it arrives next week.
After that I'll use the procedure you outlined earlier.
                      Sound like a feasible plan?
