This model needs a nic card (only one in this series that does not come with it standard).
Scanning is only via network not usb. Usb is for printing only. You will only need version 300 or higher to scan but If you are using vista or higher then goto v4006 or you will have other issues.
I have tried to forget more than most remember about this machine.
Completely agree with you! Now I too am going to go back to forgetting this machine ever existed.
