Regarding firmware for the 8830, you have to take a number of things into account. First you have to differentiate between print engine, controller, and scanner firmware as all three have their own separate firmware.
For print engine firmware, there are two types. On older 8825's and 8830's the firmware is upgraded by changing the firmware chips on the main board. Newer versions of these print engines allow upgrading of firmware by uploading it through the WebPMT interface. Looking at the main board in the printer, if there are several multicolored chip sockets, this is the type main board that requires changing of the chips.
The latest version of printer firmware I show is 01.13.07 b18
