Not missing anything.
The machine covers are from oldest model.

The older versions of this line of copiers 56xx had an external print controller that would fit in that spot. The 57xx have a single board controller that is built in. The 57xx use the same back cover as the older machines. When they came out with the 58xx line, they redesigned the cover so it doesn't have that space anymore.
