When altboot doesn't work Xerox Workcentre 7765

Well, we have tried altboot on my workcentre 7765 to no avail. One tech said the hard drive may have gone bad. Easy enough to get to the hard drive. Any special thing to do to disconnect it? The plugs look a bit different to me then machines I have worked on and don't wish to screw up the plugs. Also, two questions: Do I need to purchase the new hard drive from xerox? Mine is a Seagate Drive. Second, can I install the drive and try the altboot to load the system?

    Thanks for the continuing help

You can buy a new hdd- not from xerox- and install it. Before that you can check the old hdd by putting it into a computer and run some hdd tests. Also you can check the copier ddr2 memories.
Then try to reload the machine software.
Better to use the altboot diagnostic software not usb memory stick altboot.
