Xerox is not going to be using the Sun Microsystems Blade servers going forward. These have been a DocuTech/DocuPrint fixture since the Ultra 60 was phased out four years ago.
They have settled on an Intel-based box that is configured differently for the different products but is basically the same server. The server runs Solaris compiled for an Intel processor. It's referred to as the X86.
We are already seeing Xerox' preference for this box, the DocuSP software is at ver 61.xx.xxx for the X86, but still at 51.sp3 for the older Blades.
The interface incorporates some pretty ice cream colored icons and provides more information, but is not hugely different (in terms of operator learning burden) from the interface we have seen since 3.xx
Going forward, I believe you will see this server on many upper end DocuColor products as well as DocuTech/DocuPrint. The DocuSP server for the iGen has been very favorably received.
The server is much lighter, easily upgradeable. Configuration is light for the DocuTech, beefier in terms of processors and memory for the upper end DocuColor boxes.
Rip speed is enhanced. Reliability is better.
