xerox docucolor242 2400dpi true or not?

    Hi, everybody,

I am new in printing business and looking for a good color printer, recently I went to a printing show. I found that the Xerox claimed to be able to achieve 2400 dpi, and Minolta printers only achieve 600 dpi. However, the samples did not show much difference between the two. Can anyone tell me if the Xerox machines can actually print such a high dpi? Or is it a lie?

    Thanks

    It is a half truth.

The Xerox is the same as the KM in that they are true 600DPI machines. As you can see the Xerox scans at 600. It is an interpolated 2400 DPI. this is the same as resampling a file in Photoshop, but WAY less control or colour expertise. This is achieved by reducing the amount of colours it is able to produce. From 8 bit to 4 or 2 bit.
2400 DPI is only going to truely help in other types of output. this is left over from the days of imaging film where you were using a one bit system, so basiclly black and white. You needed the resolution for quality and to compensate for the softening/spreading that occurs on a press.

KM will give you superior quality output with the use of the toner, which is grown at a way smaller, more uniform size. This will allow for crisper images, better detailing and also will give you superior text edges at it's native 600DPI.

Interpolating is a method to compensate for fuser oil based systems or for a rougher toner.
If you were to try printing a files with a wide range of colours you would see a difference in the variety of colours and no difference in the actual quality.

Do not get double talked by Xerox, they are very good at that.
