I have a workcentre 6400 who's hard drives have been wiped so it can be given away. I was planning on running the altboot process to restore the firmware but it isn't working. I have formatted my flash drive as fat32 and created an altboot folder and the files DISABLE_DATA_BACKUP and FORCED_UPGRADE inside the altboot folder. I then copied the firmware file WorkCentre_6400-system-sw#06107010024201#.DLM into the altboot folder as well. When turning on the copier it will only display the green please wait powering up screen. Left it for about an hour and nothing happened. Do I need to do anything else to get altboot to work?

Re: Workcentre 6400 altboot
No extensions on the files?
2GB or less flash drive?
Did you plug the USB into the rear port?
When you turn it on the verify that the LEDs come on the Control Panel for a short time?
The LED on the Machine Status button comes on again, by itself, for about 20 seconds. While it is lit, within 5 seconds press the 8 button?
If nothing works its probably a bad IP PWB

Re: Workcentre 6400 altboot
Some Xerox machines get finicky about flash drives. I use Kinston and Sandisk drives, 32 & 64 gig all day long without any problems. It sounds like your methods are correct, maybe just try a new flash drive.Comment

Re: Workcentre 6400 altboot
then I format and error check the drive so any bad sectors are excluded from being written to.
just something I learned by trail/error throughout the years.Comment

Re: Workcentre 6400 altboot
I've used a mixture of USB 2.0/3.0 drives. Tried about 10 different USB drives today. No difference on the screen. Still just shows Please wait, the system is powering on.
Do I have to prepare the internal drives in any way?
Would the system show any indication that it is reading the flash drive even if it was unable to write to the hard drives?Comment
