It's been a while, but I am certain that is NOT all there is to it, or that is exactly what I would have done myself, as that would be the first thing I attempt.
I can't remember which was which, but I clearly remember there were two "gotchas" they built into them.
One was the auger gear teeth which were opposite on one vs the other. So while on one of them, the "male" end was on the cartridge, and the "female" end was in the machine, and on the other, it was reversed. So if you just did a simple swap, they wouldn't "engage" properly.
The other 'gotcha' was recessing the auger gear about 1/4" extra into the cartridge on one style vs the other which meant the auger drive would never engage the auger gear, even when the cartridge was pushed all the way into position.
