It's been a while, but I am certain that is NOT all there is to it, or that is exactly what I would have done myself, as that would be the first thing I attempt.

I can't remember which was which, but I clearly remember there were two "gotchas" they built into them.

One was the auger gear teeth which were opposite on one vs the other. So while on one of them, the "male" end was on the cartridge, and the "female" end was in the machine, and on the other, it was reversed. So if you just did a simple swap, they wouldn't "engage" properly.

The other 'gotcha' was recessing the auger gear about 1/4" extra into the cartridge on one style vs the other which meant the auger drive would never engage the auger gear, even when the cartridge was pushed all the way into position.

Just wanted to say thanks for this list. I've had it saved as a text file for years and forgot where it came from. It was helpful when I needed to keep some old 7760s running, and interesting to read about the newer machines.

I'm curious about the compatibility of developer. I've weighed out developer for the 242 and refilled into the 7760 a couple times with no issue. Does that scale up to say using 800/1000 developer in a C60/C70, or even a 7800?

Well, fusing is an issue. Not sure if the 1000 toner fuses at the same temperature as the 78, but takes longer to get to temperature than the 78 (contact arc or speed), or they fuse at different temps. Not familiar with the 1000. But the 1000 toner will not fuse in a 78. Almost but no cigar: ok for print, not for solids.
