    [Error Code] Phaser 7800 Fault

    Hey guys,
Looks like my phaser is giving me another issue and you all have been my go-to over the years. Tray 4 on my phaser is giving me problems and wont allow me to print unless I leave it part-way open. The fault code on the actual display is 374.940.04 but on the server of the device it is 74-210-00. I'm guessing a lift motor on tray 4 is dead, but i do hear motors run when I close the tray. So maybe it is a gear?

I found this package to replace it, but not sure without opening it up.
    604K20542 replaces 604K20541, 604K20540, Tray Lift Gear Kit (OEM) Xerox(R) 7500 & 7800

Are there any procedures i can follow to replace or diagnose what is the actual issue? I've already replaced numerous things on the phaser over the years like the imaging unit and what-not but I havent ever messed with the tray assembly.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

is there any paper stuck at the tray sensors?

have you checked the feed tires?

For fun, I replaced tray 4 with tray 5 and the error follows the tray itself. So placing tray 4 in to the tray 5 slot gave me a tray 5 error.

Ok i found the culprit. One of the plastic gears broke off in back for whatever reason.
          /sigh
this printer loves to break a lot

Isn't tray 4 the same as tray 3? swap trays 3 and 4. I bet the problem follows the tray. The lift gear assy on the the side of the tray is messed up. Either broken or just out of place. Should be easy to replace if needed.

Yeah. I ended up doing what you suggested and found one of the gears was broken. Thanks!

The new gears now come with a metal backing to them to stop them breaking.
