There are "lifespans" built into the machine itself (HFSI) but they're not very useful.

    My rule of thumb is:

If even with a new drum, the prints are not as "crisp" as you know they could be, or solids are weak, change the DEVELOPER.

If you see faint banding in lighter shades, like 25% cyan, etc, and you KNOW your drum is good (flip it around to other colors to test) or if you have density variation from one side of the page to the other, it is time to change the developer HOUSING.

Banding can come from a lot of places, but the developer housing is one of the most common. The second most common (at least in my experience) is the drum. But it can also come from the drum drive motor, the developer drive motor, the IBT belt, etc. Basically, anywhere... haha

But the drum and developer housing are always my first go-to's.

In reality, the developer material and the developer housing can both go a VERY VERY long time. More often than not, the gears on the back of a developer housing will fail before the housing stops printing properly. If they fail, it is no question that it is time to replace it. You can buy replacement gears, but by the time the gears fail, the housing is usually SO OLD that replacing the gears is kind of pointless. Worth having a set of gears on hand for emergencies, though.

In my personal experience, I rarely replace the developer material. It lasts SO LONG that by the time it needs replacing, and since the developer housings only cost about $200, I usually just use new developer material in a new housing and replace both. Part of my justification for replacing both might be that I HATE cleaning out the housings, because I am really OCD, and they are very tedious to get completely and totally cleaned out... I know it doesn't matter if some of the old material is still in there, but that's not how OCD works.

The main times I replace developer material and not the housing is when I got some bad toner. I only use genuine Xerox toner, but sometimes there are still issues. (Mainly heat-damaged toner...) In those cases, if I know the housing is still quite young, I'll replace just the material.

But yeah, the main thing to look for that indicates old material is lack of crispness or weak solids, and main thing to look for that indicates old housing is banding, or un-even solids/tones from one side of the page to the other.

These very general YMMV rules-of-thumb apply to ALL Fuji Xerox (Fujifilm) color machines, not just the 252 series. So the 76xx/77xx, the 700/770, the C75/J75, the 550/560/570/C60/C70, the Versant (all flavors) the 800/1000, the Iridesse, etc.
