just make sure the paper guides in the paper tray are up against each side of the paper

Ok, so you need to see where it is skewing, so open the side door during a run and you should see which part of the copier is causing the problem.

Id recommend doing it from tray 4, you should then get a good visual of the paper as it passes along the paper path.

Thanks for your help, I found the problem, when comparing it with another Xerox 7970 printer (probably identical in structure), it turned out that one compression spring was missing on the rollers... and this caused uneven paper feeding.
