    Dusty Xerox AltaLink C8070

    Hi guys,

we are talking about a Xerox AltaLink C8070 with about 330,000 pages on the counter (of which about 200,000 are in color).

A lot of toner dust has built up inside the machine (both inside and on the front door). See photo. The printouts, on the other hand, are perfect.

Is the speed (70ppm) of the machine somewhat oversized and is this the reason for the toner dust? Or does anyone know another reason for this phenomenon?

Generic toner, plugged waste auger system comes to mind.

Is that a spill? Did it build up over time or was there an accident removing the waste container perhaps? If it was a spill, there's nothing wrong, you just need to clean it up better and be more careful... haha

If it built up over time, my first guess would also be generic toner. It just doesn't work, no matter how "100% OEM compatible" they claim it is. It is a flat out lie.

No it didn't happen by accident. It has accumulated over time. Machine is a lease return and the customer always received original toner. Therefore, I would be surprised if compatible toner was used in the machine. The mess is not only at the frontdoor, but also inside.
Can this really come from the filters? They are not that dirty.

It definitely could... It is possible it got clogged, toner built up, and then the filter was changed. So the filter would look clean NOW, but it might be a new one.

Another possibility is if it has a very high page count, the developer could be getting old. They get dustier as the developer and developer assemblies age.

developer's HFSI? It may be that the wearer does not hold the toner, wear of the carrier. It is enough to remove the development unit and twist it manually, usually there is a slight dusting due to the lack of voltage, but if the dusting is large, it is necessary to replace the carrier

Generic toner for the 78 series may contain substandard developer that can cause clouding. Otherwise, the developer never wears out because it uses a trickle system. In other machines the mag rolls developed some kind of coating causing lite copies and clouding. A wire brush took care of the problem. Haven't seen that yet on the 78 series. Some of my machines have well over a million with the same dev housings.
                Altalinks are the same.

Replace the waste auger pipe. The seals over time comes unglued allowing waste toner to escape.

In my experience, that's compatible toner.
                    compatible toner causing:
                    1. shorter developer life. developer lifetime become only 10-30k pages.
                    2. dirty LPH.
                    3. fast waste toner collection. waste toner container will be full in 3-5k pages. if fresh developer is in, then it can reach 6-7k pages.
