    DC432ST interchangeability of parts problem

    Brief summary:
Where is the Scan-To-File software located?
Can parts be swapped between 2 machines with different software?
How to copy/backup the hard disks - special format?

    Hello friends,

I have a DC432ST and for the last 8 months I have been trying to find a Scan-To-File update but with no success. In desperation since the cost of the machines is so low nowadays I have decided to try to buy a new machine just for the software.

I now have an opportunity to get a DC432ST with the scan software installed, but there are some problems. Firstly the machine that has the scan software has trouble with its hard disk (it works sometimes, it seems, but very often not). I am much more familiar with the DC230 series for which I have the service manual, but the general lack of socketed EPROMS on the 432 leads me to suspect that much of the important software is installed on the hard disk.

Can someone with the service manual for the 432/440 please confirm whether this is the case, and if so, which hard disk?

The next problem is that the machine has much older software than mine. Mine has ESS 3_0_7_1s and UI S346b (or S346bR). (MF Sys is not installed). The disk size listed on the configuration report as 3071.95/4340.29 Available/Total MB. (Is this the SCSI disk in the network interface box?)

The other machine has ESS 2_2_6s and UI S2.62, MFSYS RX0114, and disk size 3107.40/4608.00 MB. IIT and DCSYS are XC1306 and XCE245 in both cases (but IIT and DCSYS are probably not involved anyway).

If it comes to a swapping of parts, does anyone know about incompatibility problems between these two versions? I assume the ESS software will be in the interface box, but what about the UI software? Will the ScanToFile software also be in the interface box (in which case I am sure on the hard disk)? If the scan software is on the intermittently faulty ESS hard disk and I copy that disk onto mine, will that then work with my machine or will I end up with two duff machines?

The third problem is how to read/copy the hard disks? Last month after reading of problems with disk crashes I tried to backup my hard disks, but found I could not. The ESS disk is SCSI and I didn't have a connector available at the time, while the disk in the MCU box (I assume that is what it is - it is marked MCUSW) was shown as unformatted in a disk utility. Does that mean it is a proprietary Xerox format without any partition tables? I don't have a fax installed, but this disk seems to be used for copying and printing.

Sorry this is a rather long post, but I should be very grateful for any help.

    Best wishes

scan software is part of sysytem software which is loaded on controller hdd, SCSI, but must be enabled to be used.
Also for scan option must have installed Hard disk interface PWB and scan to file data cable.

scan to file option was enabled by diskette, and could be disabled from diagnostic, but could not be enabled in diagnostic mode.

so if you want to have scan on your machine, must get this pwb and cable from second machine. also that machine should have scan to file enablement diskette.

if you find this diskette, mail me to help you to enable scan on your machine.

Hmm, none of the machines here seem to have the floppy, even if they have the scan installed. Did the floppy come with the new machine if the option was installed?

I think there are three hard disks on my machine - a SCSI in the ESS box, an IDE in the MCU box, and I think there seems to be a third under the ESS box, although I haven't seriously investigated. Which HD is used for scan and where is the scan PWB. Somehow I thought all the hardware was already there, but obviously just wishful thinking!! What is the HD in the MCU box used for?
