Does anyone know what a Portable Work Station (PWS) is? It is a laptop computer with software to diagnose Xerox machines, and comes in Windows XP and Windows 7 format . The Xerox service rep uses this on all service calls to repair the machines. In the old days, the rep would carry paper service manuals, but today it is all electronic. The PWS can link up to the machine to run interactive diagnostics, reset high frequency parts, and many other features. The word GSN stands for Global Service Network that only a Xerox rep can access, and it is used for updates and new fixes. The PWS lock, used by non-Xerox reps, is used to enable all the same features without the GSN network, as well as repairs and diagnostics.
It should be told that you can ONLY have PWS not GSN! Unless someone who is Xerox Authorized can sponsor you then you can have GSN.
Portable Work Station (PWS) comes in two configurations. One with Global Service Network (GSN), used by Xerox techs to access the xerox server for updates. The non Xerox tech uses PWS Lock, which enables the edocs (Electronic Documentation) which are service manuals, Searchlite, problem fixes, and diagnostic programs to link up to a machine. Both configurations can use windows XP or win 7. The older diagnostics will not run on win 7, but all the diagnostics will work on XP.
