If the scanner is not being recognized by the controller, you may not have DDS Enable turned on. If the machine is connected to your network, input the IP address of the system into a browser window on a workstation connected to the network. This will pull up the printer web interface. Look under Configuration, and Printer Set-up. There will be a check box labeled DDS Enabled. Check the box, and then press the button Update Printer. Then reboot the system, and try to copy.
As a note about the scanner, if you don't boot the system up in the proper order, the scanner may not be recognized by the controller. When booting up the system, first turn on the scanner. Wait until the display in the rear of the scanner indicates the letter "P" then turn on the printer and controller.
Also, there is a software feature which must be installed in order to scan to file. If you print a configuration page, or look at the web interface, look for the feature Scan-to-Net. If this feature is not present, and you wish to scan to file, then you will need to purchase this feature. I can help you with that if you are unable to find it elsewhere.

To update firmware, go to the Xerox support site, and select the 500 series for a 510. The firmware is there. Xerox Support and Drivers
Download the appropriate file. Be sure the printer is in the Ready condition. Use the IP address of the printer to get to the web interface on the controller. From the web interface, select: Select Printer Configuration - Utilities - Upload File. Browse to the firmware file, then select Upload. The printer screen will say, DO Not Power Off System, Update In Progress. Allow the system to reboot, and a test page labeled "Upgrade Success" will print out.
