Xerox WC 77xx Series - Compatible Toner Error (even with authentic new toners)

    Hello all,

Is there any kind of known issues with the WorkCentre 77xx series popping a "Replace with compatible toner" error even when brand new authentic Xerox toners are being used? Any solutions? I've upgraded to the latest system software, released less than a month ago, and no change.

This is a North American machine with only North American toners.

The reason I am puzzled is that it will frequently happen half-way through a cartridge. I can replace an empty, and it whirrs back to life as usual, but then will stop with the error after the cartridge is about half used up. It doesn't reject it right away, or even "kind of" right away. Only half-way through.

I've had it happen on all toners, and once even on a brand spanking new drum. (All supplies authentic and new.) Only solution for the drum was to open up another fresh one and use it instead, and the second worked fine.

Have over 10mil prints on 7675's (same supplies) and never once had this issue. Recently got a 7775 and I've noticed that its software is RIDICULOUSLY buggy and poorly done even compared to the 7675's I already had. (Which I also considered buggy, until I got the 7775!)

    Thanks in advance!

    K

      Thanks for the reply!

No faults other than the 'replace with compatible' message.

SW is the latest, dated April 26, 2013 (061.090.223.10600)

What is 761-091? My current setting is 1.

      Thanks again.

On two of my 7675's, 761-091 is 1 on one machine and 10 on another machine. What does this NVRAM do?

Ok, in that case the 7775, which has the odd error, is set correctly.

              Possible CRUM Mismatch

It may sound a little far fetched but with Xerox any things possible. It may have something to do with machine contract type which is set from install and expires at some point. See the following article:

              http://www.canonservicemanual.com/2013/05/16/system-error-124-374/

              Its worth a try.

Thanks for the reply, but no, the machine's region/market setting are all correct. There is some new behavior in the 77xx series machines that was not present in the 76xx series machines. (The controller being the only thing that changed...)

I suspect it is an effort to reduce/eliminate the ability to do funny things with the chips on the cartridges and/or refilling, but whatever it is, it is over-zealous if it is triggering a "compatible cartridge" error half way through a completely legit cartridge.

After more thought, it is pretty clearly related to the amount of coverage on the page as well. When this was happening the most, I was printing a large, extremely HEAVY coverage job. So it was using up the toner fast. (I'll go through 6 or 7 of each color on a busy day.) On lower coverage (more regular) jobs, it doesn't happen. So something about the speed that the cartridge was depleting triggered it to think the cartridge was a fake.

Unfortunately, I print comic books. So I print a LOT of heavy coverage jobs...

Anyone want to trade their 7675 for a low-milage 7775? haha
