    250 / 252 / 700 toner chip behavior

Question for others who refill toner...

On the WorkCentre 76xx series, if you refill the toner cartridge and re-use it (for example, filling the cartridge with toner from the WC7345 series which is compatible) the machine will accept it even without putting in a new CRUM chip. The 0%-100% will not reset to 100%, it will go to 3% or 10% and just stay there until all the toner is used up. You can do this an unlimited number of times, and it will always use all the toner, the only problem is it doesn't display 100%. (Who cares, really, about that unless you are a dealer.) I have used the same cartridge/chip literally hundreds of times.

On the newer WorkCentre 77xx series, this DOESN'T work... They have updated the machine software to be more annoying. When you insert the refilled cartridge, it will start back up and run for a LITTLE while, but after a couple thousand prints, with 70% or more of the toner still in the cartridge, it will stop and demand you replace the cartridge with a compatible proper cartridge.

My question (sorry for all the backstory) is what is the behavior on other machines?

    WorkCentre 76xx: Chip reuse-OK
    WorkCentre 77xx: Chip reuse-NO
    DocuColor 240/250: ???
    DocuColor 242/252: ???
    DocuColor 260: ???
    DocuColor 5000: Chip Reuse-OK
    DCP 700: ???
    WorkCentre 74xx: ???
    WorkCentre 75xx: ???

I'm trying to compile a list of which machines are SAFE to buy on the used market if refilling cartridges is a primary goal, and which ones to avoid. I bought a WC7775 and ended up using it for parts rather than as a machine when I discovered this change in the machine software. I suspect most newer machines are strict, while older machines are easy. The 250 is older than the 76xx series, so maybe it is okay?

    Thanks!

    Re: 250 / 252 / 700 toner chip behavior

Hi there! Docucolor 250 can be run over and over unlimited number of times on the same toner chip if you remember to replenish the toner in the cartridge when its 1/4 empty. Do that and you should be OK. I have faced problems regarding the toner chips (North American Toner chips aren't available in India). But for the last one and half years I have done what I just told you and it seems fine to me. The toner levels stop at 25% if you continue to replenish them before they run out. Maybe this info will help you. Good luck!
