    Xerox WC 6400 - Frozen

We have had several problems with this machine. First it displayed a 309.001.00 & 309.002.00 error, laser unit and laser polygon motor failure. So we ordered a laser unit and installed it. Then upon power up we have a 362.310, scanner controller communication fault. Other faults listed were 322.353 IOT serial number invalid. So while redoing all wiring connections for both back boards then when it powered on it froze at warm up. The machine cycles a little twice and the scanner moves back and forth a few times but it never goes to ready. I have tried to Altboot the machine and redo the firmware but it won't go into altboot mode. I tried 2 different levels of firmware to see if that mattered and even used diskpart to clean the drive to see if it would accept firmware then but same condition. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The 6400 is the worst xerox printer out there in my opinion. Best thing they are good for is a boat anchor. That being said, one very important thing to remember when removing the duel hard drives is to label them before unplugging them. If you plug the hard drives into the wrong boards it can actually blow out that board requiring board replacement. (crazy eh?) I've had to replace the whole scanner assemblies for scan problems because simple things like the scan belt is not spared as a replaceable part. My most recent 6400 call was for the machine just stopping printing with jobs piling up in the active job queue "waiting to print". The machine will continue printing if you power off / on but stops again after a while. This turned out to be one of the cooling fans that wasn't turning on. The fan was working but the 24v fan was not turning on because the MCU board was only sending 5v to it. After replacement of the MCU the fan started working and the problem did not return.

Check the battery that is soldered on to the IP board. If that battery is too low it can cause a bunch of problems such as your serial number error. I had one where the batter was corroded and was leaking. The symptom I had was that the machine kept requesting a password to be entered for the pagepack supplies (even though the machine was not set up for pagepack) and if you entered the wrong # it would lock you out for 24 hours. (had to replace the IP board to fix that one).

Good luck. I cringe every time I get a 6400 service call.
