      Tried the above procedure, but it stays in protect mode. Any ideas?

          Did you keep the disposal box out when you pushed the protect button the second time?

              Yes, it does not affect the on/off status, as if it is locked in that mode. Maybe there is a master setting, like it was used in a school where they used it for test printing.
