I have a ricograph 1700. Yes, I know it is old, but it still works. I just keep having the same problem. I can't quite pin point. I get an E-04 message, it clears then E-1 pops up. If I keep working it trying to clear it, it eventually clears. But then up it comes again. Could a sensor be going out? Suggestions?

Your E-04 code is ink overflow in the drum. You need to take apart the drum and clean out the excess ink.
As for the E-01 that's main motor lock, either a) the unit it trying to prevent damage to the drum or b) the ink and overflowed to the drum PCB and is messing up the drum position sensors or c) drum rotation pin is damaged/worn out. I would worry about the E-04 code first and see if that eliminates the E-01.
It is possible the drum PCB has gone bad too and that could cause both codes.
