Hello! Multiple questions about Riso 1700 GR, new in the game

    Hello everyone,

I figured I'd introduce myself as its my first post, I recently was given a Riso GR that came with a black drum. Everything seems to work and I have made a few prints. I would like to purchase a different color drum for it but I have some questions first.

First, off I have a GR1700 which should be able to print 11x17 or A3 correct? Well when I print it seems to be confined to 8.5x11 - is this a setting of some sort or has the machine been converted to 8.5x11? If so, is this conversion simply the drum size or something else as well?

Also, I found a few drums that are made for GR machines but are converted from 11x17 to 8.5x11 - will they work in my machine. To the contrary, if the machine is operating at 8.5 x 11 right now can I purchase a different drum that is 11x 17 and use it without a problem?

The last question I have is more technical, I notice when I print something there is always a blank line, as if a pixel is missing or something. Sometimes another blank line appears but its more faint. Is this something I can clean? I thought I cleaned everything in the manual but maybe you can help. Could this be a problem with the scanner? I hope not as fixing that can't be something easily done.

Thanks in advance for your patience, very glad to have found this forum!

OK, you got yourself some mis-information. The GR 1700 image area is only 7.8 inch by 13.6 inch, legal sized paper for US readers.

Only GR 1700 drums will fit in a 1700, no 11x17 drum will fit.

The black line sounds like the thermal print head, the part that makes the image on the master. Not a cheap part if you can find one.

As I posted earlier, GRs are old, parts are hard to come by. Good luck.

      Thanks for the quick reply!

Thanks for clearing the size issue, it is deceiving! The scanning area always for 11x17 or A3, as does the paper tray.

Is this true of all GR series Riso drums? Will any GR series drum work or do I have to verify in some way that it is not for a 11x17?
I found a drum that is a GR series but was modified from 11x17 to 8.5x11 - could this be false information and it is really 7.8 x 13.6?

It is actually a blank line, I'm guessing it is still the thermo head as I can see the missing line on the master.

After checking a diffrent spec sheet, the gr 1700 can use three different drums, b4 (250x355mm), a4 (198x286mm), & legal (7.8x13.6inch).

And sorry I misread your first post saying you had a blank line, but that is still the thermal print head.

          Good luck.

When looking for color drums, if they are complete with case, you will see on the case either GR or GR(w)- the w is a wide drum, this will not fit in the 1700 series, it is for the 3 series....

If your black line shows up in the same place, running lead to trail ,and you have cleaned the scan glass, then your problem is probably the thermal print head.
