    Newbie buying a Riso V8000

Hey all! First post, actually. Howdy!

I'm getting a Riso to make books and prints, particularly artist editions. Found an awesome Risograph V8000 for sale pretty cheap. It's actually a two-color, though one needs a service.

Total newbie here. I'm essentially just trying to make sure:

    1) There are still parts for the machine available. Not relatively old or anything, right?
    2) Interfaces well with a Mac. I'm running a pretty new Retina display, and just want to be able to print PDFs, etc.
    3) It would print 11x17. Manual seems to say this is the case, but it's kind of a funny doc I found online. Seems unreliable.

Thanks so much, all! The first is definitely most pertinent, but would appreciate any answers at all

    Hey Alex,

I'm a printer of artist books and prints etc too and I use a V8000 and love it! ...but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone for their first experience w/ Riso. What's the service that it needs? Before purchasing I would find out if your local Riso dealer has a tech w/ experience working on it. Where I'm located there are 2 dealers, neither of which will have anything to do with the v8000. DIY service is possible w/ a tech manual but other than that, there aren't many other resources for the v8, whereas if I have a problem with another machine (I also use a GR and MZ) then it's likely someone on copytech or somewhere has also ran into that same prob...

1 - it was made in 2001 i think? The v series has been discontinued, so no parts are available from Riso... there are a few spares floating around on ebay right now though...
2 - I think you can interface it to a mac w/ an SC rip, I connect it via parallel port to an old pc running windows XP and that works fine.
    3 - ya 11 x 17 should be no prob.

If I were you I'd take a pass on the V8000. It's old and it was a pain to work on. I myself didn't work on. (well very very very little) but the tech we have that did HATED THEM. They are picky machines and require some tinkering to get working and keep working. Get an MZ, it will be supported and you shouldn't have a hard time getting parts.

As far as printing to a V8000 if someone can make it work on a newer OS then cool... but I'd be willing to bet Riso won't support printing for it much longer.
Color is not 4 times harder... it's 65,000 times harder. They call it "TECH MODE" for a reason. I have manual's and firmware for ya, course... you are going to have to earn it.

Thanks, guys. Much appreciated, I passed.

Am now considering a Riso GR3770 with the same questions, really.

This seems like a better one for a starter, with lots of good features (high dpi, ledger printing, mac interfacing) — anything you'd advise against? Definitely needs to work with a new macbook pro.

          Thanks!
