GR 1700 Scanner powers on but not Control Panel/LED

    Hey guys,

Just acquired an old GR 1700 for dirt cheap. When I turn the machine on I get a small hum and the scanner lights up just fine. But there is no power going to the LED board IE: nothing lighting up on the screen.

My first instinct was to change the Lithium battery in the System PCB, but no improvement. Inspected the LED PCB briefly and everything looks in order.

What am I likely looking at here? Any suggested first steps with this?

    Thanks

    -Mike

You might first try turning the machine off, then hold down the reset key while turning the machine on, and holding that key down until the motor sounds get quieter. Sometimes a wall voltage irregularity will cause the machine's operating memory to get nonsense data, which can cause all manner of undesired operation, and if you reset the memory that way the machine will either work or you'll know that something is actually broken.
If the reset doesn't work, remove the right hand front cover and check the fuses on the power supply board with a meter. Fun fact: in some situations replacing a burned out fuse with one of a higher rating will work well, but I've found that will only destroy things here.
While the GR line is so obsolete there are no parts available for it anymore, they were pretty good back in their day, which was in the '80s. So, good luck!

      Iowatech,
Thanks so much for the reply. I tried the reset startup as suggested to no avail. All fuses seem to be in order as well.

However, when I inspected the connections between the System PCB in the back, and the LED PCB I found my problem! RATS! Or perhaps mice rather.

I had cleaned up a few droppings and the start of a nest when I first got the machine a couple days ago, but had neglected to check thoroughly for damage. These are the wires (presumably) sending power from the System PCB (CN2) to the LED board (CN13), clearly chewed through a bit. there is some more damage to the same wire further below.

So my new question is, how do i replace this wire??

You will probably have more luck repairing the wires yourself than finding a replacement harness.

Unless you have a local Riso junkyard near by.

pm'd you ddude, thanks for the post.

My next challenge will be figuring out how to uncrimp the end fixture in order to feed the fresh cut wires into them...

Any advice on how to crack one of these badboys open without breaking it?
