    Riso GR drum screen removal

    Hello,

I recently picked up a Riso GR drum (w) that had been sitting for a very long time. I soaked towels in kerosene and let them soak on the screen for a while to get the screen cleaned and the new ink flowing through. Everything works great except for that there are what seems to be chunks of dried ink chips (imagine a paint chip that is a half centimeter big) lodged behind the screen and on the surface that sits behind the screen. It's causing there to be several little spots on the prints where ink is being blocked.

I'm wondering, do you think that these will eventually dissolve and go away as I keep saturating the drum with ink and solvent? If not, does anyone know how to possibly remove the screen to access behind it so that I could manual remove the chips of dried ink? I tried searching for instructions on drum repair/rebuild to see if there was a method for screen removal, but I came up short.

Any help is much appreciated! Thanks!

Removing the screen is pretty easy. There are two springs counter clockwise from the clamp that hold the trail end of the screen in place. Remove the springs from the posts they are on, and then just peel the screen off of the drum, you can let it hang free from the screen's mounting clockwise from the clamp and have access to the area of the drum shell you need. Reverse that procedure when you reinstall the screen, if the springs are not damaged they will align the screen properly.
If time permits, double check the surface of the screen for small bits of master material or other crud first. I have seen that cause the problem you describe far more often than dried ink.
    Good luck.

Thanks so much! It was pretty easy to remove and clean. There were dried ink chunks on the inside of the screen, plus there seemed to be a little erosion on the actual metal part of the drum (the surface with little holes behind the screen. Some of the little holes had merged with their neighbors to form slightly bigger holes in some areas. The drum functions fine tho!

Anyway, thanks again for your help!
