Anyone here do the hiring for larger dealers that could give me an idea of what the going pay scale is for technicians with 15 and 20 years experience? Could you also put the area of the country you are at.

That's a pretty tough question...I'm sure my 20 years in the business would not help me much if I were to leave my present employer..the only employees that can keep their present saleries as they go from company to company are the high level executives that make the poor decisions that cause their current company to declare bankruptcy, then go on to the next company and do it all again...When's the last time you saw a entry level tech travel up the ranks to become anything higher than a service manager, or maybe an area manager...don't get me wrong, I enjoy what I do and if given the chance I might turn the oppoutunity down, but I think a proven tech with 20 years can make a better VP than someone who has been a VP for 10 previous companies.

In the San Francisco Bay Area the average is 50k per year. However, most have seen the current economy as a reason to slash the pay of technicians. An experience technician can expect 35 to 40k per year. And that assumes that you are fully network competent. I started with Xerox in 86' at $14/hour. Xerox now pays $18/hour. To me it seems foolish to hire a staff that will jump ship at the first decent offer.
Color is not 4 times harder... it's 65,000 times harder. They call it "TECH MODE" for a reason. I have manual's and firmware for ya, course... you are going to have to earn it.

the going rate in North America is what ever the employer wants to pay...............
being as the service technician employment is not a recognized trade here, there are no guidelines for any employers to follow.

Wow, being a technician for somebody else certainly does not pay well at all.
My first "real job" out of college was in government work (PA state govn't), all major holidays off, 37.5 hour workweeks, straight time up to the 40 hour mark, and Saturday overtime at time and a half for anything over 40 hours. Some places paid double time if you worked Sundays or really early in the morning; which I never got.
Health plan was decent, $2.00 per pay period (every two weeks) for the HMO, $20 per pay period for the PPO. medical, emergency room, dental and vision. Vision and dental no copay I think. Free glasses every two years. Doctor and specialist copays $15 (used to be $10), emergency room $50 and some prescription plan.
Time off was 13 or 14 sick days per year paid. 1-4 personal days per year depending on time served. Vacation started at 1 week and topped out at about a month or a day a pay I think after 20 or 25 years of service.
I was a trainee right out of college MANY years ago and base pay was $17.44/hour. Theoretically, if I would have stayed there I would have been making the same as the old timer that sat right next to me doing exactly the same amount and kinds of work who was making about $40/hour base.
Retirement was supposed to be really good and you could carry over 45 vacation days and 300 sick days to retirement and get paid at 100% rate of the vacation and a tiered rate for sick days. So you could bank days over the years and get a lump sum payout at your retirement rate of say $40/hour, or higher if you got a different state job. So a lump payout might be around $80,000.
My dad still nags to this very day about me quitting and thinks I'm a fuckin' idiot for ever leaving, but honestly I hated it. You didn't get rewarded for doing well or being smart or going above and beyond...also you couldn't get fired even if you wanted to. I was even asked to shut down my computer once and leave the premises because it was 5:00pm (quitting time) and they didn't want me to stay and finish working!
