Brother Fax does not connect to line when call/ring signal comes in

    Situation:
Old Samsung Fax SF 560R has been working on a faxline of a Mitel telephone system fine.
Now I wanted to replace it with a new Brother Fax 2840. No error just want a new fax machine.
This phone system uses a very short double ring (ring-ring) as calling signal which was no problem
for the Samsung. But the Brother doesn't accept this ring signal. I doesn't connect to the line.
The Brother signals the ring signal with its soundspeaker and even shows the calling number in it's display but won't connect to the line
    in order to recieve.
I've tried several settings. Number of rings from 00 to 05 and all settings of the menu 0. Installation and several settings from Worker Switch
12 and 14. Calling frequeny range. But nothing helped.
I remember this problem from 20 years back. The were always possibilites to do settings in the service mode for this short double-ring signals, so
that the fax machines connected to the line.
Could anyone help. Or does this fax model not work with this phone system?
    Thanky you very much.l

Re: Brother Fax does not connect to line when call/ring signal comes in

1/ Did you connect the Brother fax cable ? or just plug the old Samsung cable into the Brother as that was easier ?

If so not all fax cables are wired the same and that could be the problem

2/ Is the machine answer mode set to Fax ?

If not change it to Fax only

3/ Print out a user settings report and look for Fax Detect

If it is on switch to Off ( This causes weird problems especially if the fax and internet are on the same line which they often are )

These are the only 3 non answer issues I have seen with Brother machines

    Hope this helps

    N.B

I have included the obvious things first as this is your first post in case you are an end user rather than a Tech

you need to set the brother for distinctive ring

What is Distinctive Ring and how do I program it?

        Thank you Dickie:
        1. I've used the original Brother cable.
        2. The recieve mode is "Fax Only".
        3. I haven't tried setting "Fax Detection Off" yet. This I could do.
But the Manual says, with "Detection Off", effect will be that you have to press start
on the fax to start recieving when you took up a phone on the same line before.

        Thank you bsm2,

but I'm here in Europe. There is no distinctive ring function here at all.
The Fax machines don't have this function.

I know from other brands that there are Softswitches in the Service Mode where you can
make setting for the ring tone recognition.

If it is set to fax only then it will answer calls anyway, try changing this as I have known it to cause all kind of different strange issues here in the U.K
Out of interest is their broadband on this line as well ? as per my earlier post this will cause problems when fax detect is on
