i know on the 575 series this was an issue but you could see it.
Cause:

Rough handling during shipping can cause the scan module to become dislodged from the scan carriage.

Additional Information:

During normal operation, the scan module is positioned under the strip which separates the ADF glass from the flatbed glass. Approximately 50 seconds after power on, the scanner will begin calibration, moving the scan module back and forth several times as it scans the calibration strip located under the glass.

• If the scanner fails calibration, a 30.03.23 error will occur.
• If the scanner cannot reach Home position, a 30.01.08 will occur.
• If the scanner motor movement is obstructed, a 30.03.45 will occur.
• If the scanner fails to complete the calibration within the allotted time, a 30.01.45 can occur.

I guess it's pretty much a crap shoot then. I had a 575 with a scanner code...

Replaced scanner, still codes

Replace the scanner board, still codes

Swapped formatter, still codes

Customer gave up on repair, had about $1100 wasted.

I guess it's pretty much a crap shoot then. I had a 575 with a scanner code...

Replaced scanner, still codes

Replace the scanner board, still codes

Swapped formatter, still codes

Customer gave up on repair, had about $1100 wasted.

What a bummer. all that work and hp said in the troubleshooting manual below. [ In reference to the error code]30.01.08


"The flatbed optical assembly cannot find the origin notch.This is an informational message, and no action is required ". Hp has to come better than this, especially when the machine is that new. The explanation of the error sounds like someone whose english is well let's say obscure. what! it cannot find the origin notch. [ origin notch i would interpret to mean scanner home position ]. This is not copier language, is Hp inventing some new copier lingo. I still like hp machines though, i like the challenges, so i don't get bored.


Did you update the firmware or is it current ?.

Base on discussion with the caller, the code resets after rebooting and works for a while. I had planned to have one of their help desk call me so I can have them update the firmware. Based on location, no laptops or phones allowed. I just wanted to know more about it before I went their because it is a real pain to access. Get my truck tossed going in and sometimes coming out. Thanks for the replies.

It'd be cool if you could get that machine back to your shop and continue to troubleshoot it. I haven't even worked on one of these yet. It'd be nice to know what they mean about "origin notch". Remember the old HP manuals, used to cover theory & have page after page with timing charts, diagrams, & dozens of other things that actually help you understand how the machine works and what it's doing? I miss those manuals.

Acutally Hp has three separate service file manuals for this series. They are service, truoubleshooting and repair. The manuals are good and you can do a lot. It even has a timing diagram, but individual wiring and it's signal name are not there. I think the manuals are enough for reapairs. Techs will have to become familar with the teardown and get some knowhow on how the machine is assembled.
The thing i don't get with Hp is after all these years of their error codes, they have not narrowed the symptoms and faults in to specific codes , but have left the famous 49.** to mean a variety of issues. By now, they have had enough feedbacks to either issue new codes or point directly or closely to common coding faults.
Maybe i need correction here, but just my outlook on HP bfiefly.

I would love to have it at the shop, however, based on where it was placed, it's not going to happen. It has an HDD and therefor can never leave the compound. Well the HDD can never leave, so it becomes a moot point.
