    hp 4540

Got a customer with cm4540 with 49.38.03 error. Had this before and have either updated firmware or replaced network board and again updated firmware. Cured fault on a few occasions however this one is a problem. l have changed the network card however within a minute of machine getting to ready state the error comes up (49.38.03) which does not give enough time to load the memory stick to upgrade the firmware and get rid of this annoying message. Any ideas would be appreciated

Have fitted new formatter board (network board) just seems like a bad print is stuck in the machine and will not clear. When reaches ready state sits there fine for about one minute then the print light flashes as if going to print and then the error comes on. Have tried a factory reset/cold reset, still does it. Gonna scrap it before too long. Thanks for your suggestions

Yep new network board or formatter board as we call it. Network lead unplugged and still comes up with the error. Never had this problem before. As previously mentioned seems as if it a print is stuck in memory somewhere. Very strange. Gonna scrap the bloody thing l think and sell them an upgrade unless someone can come up with a new idea. Spending too much time on it. All help as always is appreciated from you guys

Try resetting the memory. I have only worked on smaller HP laser MFP's.
I just reset the memory on one however. It was stuck in memory, similar to the issue you were having.
This was a HP400 pro and to reset the memory you had to plug it in, hold bottom left of touchscreen and hit the power button.
This cleared the memory and brought it back to factory settings, fixing my issue.
I'm not sure how you reset the memory on that model, but I would give it a try.

                  You replaced this?

                  4050 formatter board (hp) C4251-69001

I'm just asking because the network board (jetdirect board) is different than the formatter board... although some formatter boards have network connections on them.

Hi There. You are talking about the LASERJET 4050 part number C4251-69001. Old machine that does take a formatter and separate jet direct card. This a CM4540 large multifunction machine and the network connection is on the formatter board all in one. Part Number. CE871-69003. Appreciate any help you can give

                    Thanks again

According to the P4510 service manual.
The P4510 b/w printer will default to the last print job done on errors. If you do an engine test it will always default to tray2.
The P4510 will allow you to remove the formatter board and power the machine up an engine test to remove last event log from the system.

Can you remove the formatter board in the CM4540 model power the machine up and do and engine test (press hard switch) ?
It might shift/jog something in the memory event log ? I've never done it so I don't know for sure....

Many thanks for that. I will give it a go Monday. I have tried to switch on with hard drive disconnected but would not set up however l will try your suggestion. I am sure it is a bad print stuck in the queue which will not clear.. When you say power machine up and do engine test (press hard switch) what do you mean. Our HP guy is on Holiday and l do not normally get involved in these machines so any help is appreciated

Haha. Now it's making sense. I read the post wrong originally, and we've been talking about 2 different machines.

firmware can be upgraded thru the preboot menu(before machine starts up). 49.38.30 according to hp can be 3rd party app related(like scanning connector that is installed on the cm4540) or some hp functions fax archiving and some type of usb functions. the firmware on this model is on the HDD. In the preboot menu you can do disk clean, which deletes everythingand you would have to reload firmware or a partial clean which leaves the firmware intact but wipes out everything else. If the cm4540 is above the fw level below then you might want to contact hp .
                            49.38.XX , 49.38.03, 49.38.0C, 49.38.07 Errors

                            Event log error message
The following 49.38.XX errors have been resolved in Firmware code 11.3 (Ver: 2131305_192065)

                              Hi there.

Many thanks for that information. I have actually found some notes from our HP guy (who buggered off on holiday just at the right time!!) which states exactly what you have suggested, mainly do a partial HDD clean and then update the firmware. I am not sure of the firmware level at present as l have not been able to get a print off quick enough before the error comes up but hopefully once l can do a partial clean this should resolve the problem and l can then load latest firmware Thanks again for your help
